We wake with the birds this morning , and there's plenty of them !! After all the formalities , we packed & headed down to Myall Beach , a short stroll from the campsite . Another beautiful beach with the rainforest touching the sand - spectacular !!
Back to the ute and off we went for an adventure in the rainforest . The road winds it's way through and occasionally it goes past another beach , this one is Noah's Beach .
It's hard to concentrate on driving when you are going through this !!
Our drive took us to Marrdja Boardwalk - a 1.2 klm walk through the rainforest and mangroves . This is the creek running into the mangroves .
This is a Strangler Fig that has killed off it's host tree , the host tree has rotted away .
It's hard to look at everything in the rainforest , there's so much to see from ground level to canopy level .
One palm has it's security well looked after , rows of spikes keeping all the pests away !!
Fan Palms are a majestic looking palm .
And then there's the mangroves , all different types and suiting different areas of the forest .
Ferns cling to tree trunks and cascade down from them , some can weigh as much as a tonne , and are a great habitat for other animals as well .
Given all this growth , there has to be a downside right , no , but there's a whole mechanism to breaking down logs , branches & leaves - this is a small part of that breakdown system .
Heading further south , we found another small beach . It had 2 tea trees standing guard either side of the walkway to the beach . This one was the biggest tea tree I have ever seen - it had to be 3m across the trunk and 30m tall .
We stopped at Cow Bay for some lunch , Mt Thornton was keeping an eye over everything .
We headed off again , stopping at Jindalba for another rainforest walk . More ferns , king ferns 8m tall , palms , vines , birds & animals . One bird was making noises we'd never heard before , but we couldn't see it unfortunately .
We found some more fungi , this one the size of a desert bowl !
It was time to head for the ferry , but not before stopping at Alexandra Range Lookout . It looks out over the Daintree River and is a great view .
After a few more kilometres of rainforest and winding road , we arrived at the ferry and waited for about 5mins before driving on - only $15 this time , one way !! A little cheaper than the last one we were on haha . The river is certainly wider as well .
Next stop was Mossman , our home for the night . The caravan park is right beside the local swimming pool and was a cool diversion after setting up camp .
There's a sugar mill here as well , and it ran all night . We were fortunate to have an LED streetlight right beside us - we didn't need to use a torch , it was almost daylight in the tent !! Fortunately it went out about 10pm and came back on at 5:30am .
