18/7/19 A bit of off road

Back again , more catchups after being out in the country for the last week without phone or internet or TV - absolutely glorious!!
Okay , before leaving Karratha we did a 4wd from Cleaverville to Wickham , along a not so well used track with washed out sections and tidal areas to cross .
First we went to Cleaverville - a campground east of Karratha - it's a popular area for campers of all descriptions , and only 13 kms from the highway - all gravel though . The drone came out to show some of the beautiful scenery . This is looking toward the west and there's also a boat ramp in the estuary just behind the ridge .

Further back toward the highway , the track crosses a clay pan , this is it from above - notice everything has a healthy green glow from the recent rains .

Finding the start of the track , we headed off not knowing what we'd find , first an old quarry with many different types of rock , then along further was a tidal area where the track had been washed away some time ago - this is it . You can see the track in the bottom left of photo with the washouts .

Fortunately for us the tide was out , there was still wet areas and we had to drive then stop & look for a solid part to drive through , then proceed with some caution & some speed to get through !! We managed to negotiate it without any dramas , continuing on then taking a side track stopping for some lunch with views to the ocean .

Another surprise was a small flock of budgies .

The track took us past some more of the typical ridge lines in this area . Green spinifex grass and chocolate topped hills .

Before we knew it we'd arrived back to Wickham , so we headed out to Cossack for a look . This is the view down onto Settlement Beach . The tide was on the way back in , all the darker area's are where the little sand crabs have been cleaning out the sand from their burrows - been a bit busy here .

Back toward Cossack there's access to the river flats & the tide ripples in the sand .

More of the sand crabs work .

Then the tide chased me off the sand and we headed for home . Next few days we took care of some jobs , changed the batteries in the van , before heading to Port Hedland to visit long time friends Garry & Linda .
