19/10/16 To the Rock

The time has come to leave Alice Springs , still lot's to do and see here , but that will be on another visit .
Given the weather forecast , we decided to go to Uluru instead of Kings Canyon - if it does rain , we can still get around and do things at Uluru , whereas if we're at Kings Canyon , we will be a captive audience !!
We left Alice at 9am and had a nice tail wind to help us down the road . The country looked different from when we drove down to Rainbow Valley - probably due to the cloud cover . As we passed the turnoff to Rainbow Valley we were again on new roads and new scenery . The cloud cover started to disappear , and the sun started to shine .
The single biggest feature of our drive , was the proliferation of wildflowers - there were millions of white flowers , some yellow & more & more pink ones .

The rangers & staff at Yulara haven't seen some of the flowers here for several years , it's the most they've seen for many years - it made our drive quite easy . We thought last years drive to Karijini had plenty of wildflowers - todays drive has had many more !!
One of the biggest mountains appeared on the horizon to our left - apparently many people mistake Mt Connor for Ayers Rock - it looks completely different . There is a rest area and lookout to check it out , across the road is one of the numerous red sand dunes that you can walk up and see the salt lake on the other side .

We drove on towards Yulara , driving past red sand dunes one after another , wildflowers still everywhere . Occasionally we caught a glimpse of Uluru , it would disappear behind the sand dunes , just as you pass another one and think we'll get to see it , another dune would be blocking it out . This went on for about 10 klms before we got a better view .
Before much longer we found ourselves at Yulara and checked in and set up , before relaxing with a beer . There is a lookout in the park to see Uluru from , we had some dinner and headed up there to get sunset - unfortunately there were some trees in the way , so we headed back to the ute and drove around to another lookout . On the walk up there was a lot of these bushes all out in flower - the flowers were very small .

Well , here it is in close up and then in all it's glory - Uluru / Ayers Rock !!!

Camel rides appear to be a popular choice here as well . Here they are enjoying sunset .

These 2 are later , as the sun disappeared over the horizon .

One other benefit of this lookout was that you could spin around and you could see The Olgas / Kata Tjuta with the sun setting over them .

That's it for today , stay tuned for more . Here's a map link :-https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Q7Sh8ypYw8SNDT2mrOOEdK17btY&usp=sharing
