20/4/17 Hit the heights

Well , we've moved again and are in Narrabri . Our travelling friends , Ric & Marc , who we met in WA and caught up with 6 months ago , arrived beside us yesterday . The afternoon was spent eating , talking , talking some more , and later a couple of beers - 6 or 7 hours later we retired for the evening. What a good day , it was great to catch up with them !!

We farewelled Ric & Marc this morning , then headed off for the day to Mt Kaputar National Park . It's not far out of Narrabri , but it is a lot higher - 1,510 m above sea level - that's just over 5,000ft , so it was a bit cooler up there . There are numerous walks , a few camp sites , and some cabins you can stay in , unfortunately , or maybe fortunately , you are not allowed to take caravans / motorhomes up there . The road starts of gravel , but then goes to bitumen , single lane or one & a half lanes , with steep drop offs over the side .
This is the view as you drive towards the NP entry .

The tall peak on the left is Mt Euglah , this is it a bit closer up .

After winding our way up the mountain , we arrived at Doug Sky Lookout for this view .

The claim to fame for this National Park is that you can see 10% of NSW from the top - a big claim ! Cotton fields were visible in the distance , and appear as the whiter looking fields .

When we went to Dripping Rock last Saturday , we went past a few coal mines - these were visible as well - they are certainly a blight on the landscape !!

Continuing on , we stopped at another lookout , before going up to Mt Kaputar itself , where they have a lookout deck built around the trig point . Views stretched off into the distance in most directions , the only spot we couldn't see was to the south - trees were blocking that part of the view , but we could still see about 300 degrees instead of the complete circle . The photo speaks for itself .

We could see the Warumbungles - which are 150klms away , Coolah Tops in the south - about the same distance , and the Great Dividing Range stretching north and south into the distance - pretty impressive . Mt Kaputar is the 2nd tallest mountain in NSW .
From here we drove to the camping area for a look , then went to Mt Dowe . There's a tower there that is 500 feet high !! The stay wires that are helping to keep it upright are about 100mm/ 4inches thick steel wire cable that is terminated into a very large concrete block - probably about 10 tonne !!
After some lunch we went down to 3 lookouts , the walk took us down the hill , through a lot of snow gums , ribbon gums and mountain gums , down many steps , and out onto a rock shelf covered in moss & grass & many other herb type plants , there was a raised walkway as well , to keep you off the grass & moss etc .

Reaching the lookout facing to the south presented this view for us .

The walk to the next lookout took us along the edge of the forest and out onto the rock shelf that's covered in heath , then moss & lichen - this is looking back to Mt Dowe .

We are right below the flight path to Sydney .

Scribbles appeared on a lot of the trees , giving them character .

Back to the ute and head back to town , but there were a couple of other walks & lookouts , that we'd left to do as we were coming back out . Stopping at Governors Walk & lookout , we wandered down the track to another viewing deck over Mt Governor .

There were also views around to Kaputar as well .

Back in the ute and tackled the road back down , at one spot there is a view of this cliff face and peak - not sure what it's name is though ??

With that done , we headed back into town to find we had about 20 new additions to the show ground  - there's a lot of people starting to head off to the warm country , so most of these will just be here for the night and be gone in the morning - just look at what they missed !!!
