Here we go again , this time to the Pioneer Cemetery in Charters Towers . It was opened in 1872 then closed in 1895 - full house sign went up !! The cemetery covers an area of about 15 acres and unfortunately is in a state of disrepair , you would not know there are 5,000 people buried here . Many are unmarked graves , only marked with white quartz stones , those that do have fences & headstones are falling down .
The boundary fence was interesting as well , the strainer posts are like nothing we've seen before , with built in strainers to tension the wire cable fence . The posts are different heights and are also steel .
Change in scenery time , we headed around to Centenary Park where there's some statues and memorial to the gold discovery . Jupiter Mosman ( the aboriginal horse boy ) discovered gold in a creek while looking for some pack horses that had rum away in a thunderstorm - apparently he was having a drink and found a gold nugget in the creek !!
There are also some murals on the amenities building , here's one .
The park was used as a cricket ground for many years , during the war Americans played baseball here , now it's used for recreation , monthly markets and kids playground .
The park has many trees and consequently lots of bird life , here are some of the trees - expecting birds weren't you .
It looked like someone spilt some grey paint down one tree .
There's a couple more houses beside the park that are worth having a look at as well .
Time for a visit to the museum , it's a large museum with many exhibits - these may jog your memories .
These are some of the first card machines ( poker machines ).
A Remington Type Writer
Chevrolet Utility
Camera's and miscellaneous machinery
This aerial photo was quite interesting , all the yellow markings are actually where mine shafts were in Charters Towers .
This is the cashiers till from the haberdashery store .
This is from Charters Towers telephone exchange , and was still in use in 1981 !!!!
Various horse equipment .
Some kitchen utensils etc .
And finally a radiogram .
Hope you enjoyed the flash backs . Cheers
