Here I am left to my own devices , so headed in to town and got the bike out for a ride around . I started at Town Beach where the local council has done some tiered grass seating so people can view Stairway to the Moon - low tide and full moon rising creates a stairway in the mudflats . This area used to be a wasteland and pretty much unusable - they've done an outstanding job .
This is another section of the park
New this year is this sculpture , which has been built / assembled in one of the new roundabouts near Chinatown .
And here's a spot I'll be using a bit , Broome Golf Club , this is looking down the 18th hole from green to tee . 1st hole is just below the trees , tee to the left and green further around to the right . This is the view from the carpark .
While cruising around town , I stopped at the Japanese Cemetery - there were many Japanese pearl divers in Broome , hence the amount of headstones , very tidy , well organised sacred space .
Next door is the Chinese Cemetery with elaborate gates , but the layout and general feeling is definitely downbeat compared to next door .
It is extremely difficult to get accommodation here at the moment , Broome is full to overflowing with visitors , local and interstate . There are 2 overflow camping area's , this is the 7th Day Adventist overflow - they basically fill up the carparks around their church with travellers who are lucky enough to get a spot for a maximum of 7 nights - I was lucky enough to get a spot . One of the church locals drives this 1956 Pontiac around Broome .
Just above Chinatown is the new Roebuck Bay Lookout . The roof pattern was designed by an indigenous artist and local high school students , and has been laser cut , creating the patterns on the ground when the light comes through from the sun .
This is looking out onto Roebuck Bay
There used to be an old jetty at Town Beach , they are now building a new one .
Over to Cable Beach and the famous camel rides , this is one of them .
Time was mine to wander the beach , I enjoy checking out the work of all the crabs on the beach , the amount of sand the roll up and away from their homes is amazing - this is there work for no pay !!
Another day was spent out near the port at low tide , colours are spectacular .
Below the jetty at low tide reveals a lot of rock , stay tuned for a comparison at high tide in another blog .
Given the low tide I investigated a lot of the rocks that are normally covered in water - I am only presuming that this is a form of coral hanging below the rocks ?
this however is definitely a soft coral .
And this a hard coral
And lot's of barnacles
