Leaving 40 Mile , we head west and then start to veer to the south as the highway winds it's way down towards the north west corner of the state . Our overnight stop is 7klms from the highway on Onslow Rd , it's called quartz hill , but were not sure why , it's a small bump of red rock with some scattered quartz lying around the ground .
Sunset was pretty spectacular turning it even redder , if that's possible .
We did have to share it with 2 other vehicles though , they were close too - at least 80m away 😂😂
Parry Range looked good in the late afternoon light .
There weren't many features on there horizon here , only a couple of small trees that i could pick up as the sun set .
After a quiet night , we had a slow start , due to the strong winds that were blowing . It was forecast to slow down during the morning , so we waited till 10am before heading off , and it paid off , the wind did ease off .
Fuelling up at Nanutarra , because we had to - it's too far away from everywhere , so they have you at ransom - fuel was $1.93 per litre ! It was only half a tank , but still cost plenty - but that's the choice we've made , we travel , therefore we need fuel - simple !
Further down the road is another rest stop we usually stop at - Yannarie . We go down off the bitumen , closer to the dry river bed , it's usually quieter down there as well .
The gumtrees caught the late afternoon sun , looking great .
After another uneventful night , we packed up and left later again . The wind wasn't as bad as yesterday and was more coming on our side today till we turned off on Burkitt Rd , when it changed to a tail wind . Along Burkitt Rd the wildflowers were out in force , with Mulla Mulla and Cockroach Plant . When we first came across to WA we found a lot of orange flowering plants - acres & acres of it as we headed south from Port Hedland . Turns out they are not orange flowers , they are orange seedpods - this is what they look like .
Not much further down the road is Bullara Station , where we will be for a couple of nights . This is the old shearing shed and sorting table . The corrugated iron at the end actually blocks off the showers and toilets . The doors on most of the showers & toilets are old 44 gallon drops that have been flattened and framed , the corrugated iron has been reclaimed from various other uses on the property as well . Horse shoes have been bent to form door handles & clothes hooks - there's not much that haven't recycled . The shower block we were using had different shower heads - they have used old galvanised buckets , which have holes drilled into the base , and slots in the sides so that they don't overfill . What that means , is when you turn the water off , it continues to flow untill the bucket is empty - takes a bit of getting used to !
Hanging in the shed was this old chainsaw - glad I never had to use it !!
There's a couple of walk circuits on the property , we chose the tin can walk , and yes it has a lot of old tin cans decorating trees & shrubs to keep you on the right path . There were some wildflowers around .
Some also had great spikes - these were about 25mm long !!
A lot of old equipment , cars , trucks and junk , lie where they stopped .
These are tyres , probably from the old truck .
Another walk takes you past some old windmills , this one had the windmill chained to the tower - it looks like it's fallen off !
The star of the woolshed would have to be this fire pit / Bbq all made of pretty solid steel .
Bullara Station does have a cafe as well , apparently they do scones and coffee really well - everyone kept telling us about them . Bit of a shame we don't drink coffee and they're only scones after all .
