25/4/22 Forbes & Grenfell

On the road again , a little earlier today - basically , we were awake early , so got up and went . First stop was Cobar for a tank of fuel that was 20 cents a litre cheaper than everywhere else - might not sound much , but when you are about to put 100 odd litres in , it's a $20 difference !!! Back out onto the hwy , we made our way to Nyngan , where we stopped to check the weather , and then to make a choice of direction . The weather coming wasn't looking great , so a tactical decision was made to head south to get us away from the worst of the weather . At first the road was okay , but gradually worsened , it was taking us through river flats , and with all that extra rain , the roads were suffering a bit - so were we !! This was our view on the way to Tottenham .

Stopping just outside of town , to have a break and some lunch , then continuing on again to Tullamore , then Trundle . The roads weren't getting any better , so we stopped at Trundle Showgrounds for the night . Trundle Hotel used to have the longest hotel verandah in Australia , till a hotel at Cobar took the crown from them .

We took the photo of the hotel and the next photo whilst sitting in the ute - Trundle has the widest main street we've seen . from the hotel side , there's parking , then 2 lanes of traffic , then 90 degree parking , then a transit lane then these shops .

An uneventful night was had and we got sorted and off again toward Forbes . The plan was to stop here at the free camp and have the day in Forbes . We checked out the campground - it was very wet and lots of trees to play havoc with the solar - we decided to stretch the legs and have a wander around a section of Lake Forbes . The part that we walked around has the old single lane bridge that leads into the main street. There were several fountains in the lakes , here's one of them - they're all the same as this one .

Here's the single lane bridge .

The parklands beside the lakes were in great condition , lush & green . There's a sign at the entry that warns this area is hazardous - uneven ground , water , open drains , and falling branches - who'd have thought this pretty green area would have all these hazards just lurking there , ready to catch you out !!

The Newell Hwy goes through town and over the lake , this is some of the artwork under the bridge .

Ruling out Forbes for an overnighter , we fuelled up again , then headed to Grenfell , to the free camp beside the old railway station . Arriving before lunch , we set up and had lunch before getting the bikes off so we could have a look around town . First stop was the silo art about 500m away from us . What a clever piece of work it is - if you get in this position all the artwork on the silos lines up , without any air gaps between the silos .

We got chatting to a guy who was stopped taking photo's , well about an hour or more later , we continued our ride around town . Matt - a retired AFP police officer - didn't mind a chat , and we enjoyed our talk with him .
Grenfell has some brilliant old buildings , unfortunately for us , they are doing some massive renovations to the street . A major section was all fenced off and cars were only allowed to go down the street one way . Here's some of it without the fenced off area .

There's an Art Deco building on the corner of a roundabout , on it's doors were these 2 copper octagons with these wheat symbols on it .

Outside was a seat with Henry Lawson sitting beside Lyn - amazing who you meet haha .

Here's more of the main street with the fenced off area .

And again

A different view of the Holy Trinity Church

And at the bottom of the main street is the Railway Hotel , so many great buildings in one town .

This is the old railway station , with an old carriage parked there .

The tracks are still there , just a little overgrown .

This is an old flour mill , now a fertiliser supplier .
