26/4/22 To Coolac & Gundagai

Leaving Grenfell , we head to Young - a very busy place - but we decide to continue on to Harden , to the Showground for a few days to see what the weather is going to do . Harden is part of the twin towns of Harden Murrumburra - 2 towns together . There was another silo art mural here , it's bit harder to get to see it all , but still impressive !

One of the more original shops in town .

And the catholic church - no shortage of money for church buildings .

Well , our stay at the showgrounds was short , they had State Pony Club Championships on this weekend so there would be too many people for our liking , so off we chugged again . Yass Showground was our next choice , and we arrived , found a spot and decided to have a look around first before setting up . The amenities were a good 500m walk from where we'd parked , and with rain forecast , the walk to the showers & toilets wouldn't be pleasant or safe in the rain . We left and did some shopping before checking our options . Time for some backtracking , off to Coolac , to Coolac Cabins & Camping - they had a spot for us for 5 days - and that would see the weather out . About an hour later and we were set up , checking with the owners first , I then got the drone out and took some photos for them of their campground .

They are situated in a valley a few kilometres out of Coolac , surrounded by rolling hills .

This is another of the campground , the Hume Hwy / freeway is a few kilometres away , but was never a problem with noise .

Next day we headed out for a drive round some back roads and found our way to Gundagai via Muttama & Burra Rd . This is Hoares Rd , which lead us around to near Muttama and Cootamundra Rd.

Some beautiful trees lined the road .

There are lots of new crops coming up at the moment , the locals have been getting their crops in , and with the rain the crops are jumping out of the ground .

Just before getting to Gundagai , we found a road that took us to the top of the surrounding mountains , promising us some great views , so off we went up Reno Rd . This is Gundagai down in the valley in the distance .

We'd heard about the old road bridge being removed , so went down for a look - all that's left were some stumps in the ground - don't know whether they'd been left there as a reminder of what was there - or ran out of money to remove them all !! It was disappointing to see the bridge has gone !!

The old rail bridge is still standing roughly parallel to the old road bridge , but by the look of it , it will be neglected until it starts to fall as well !

To extend our drive a little further , we headed out to Brungle Bridge over Tumut River , where we stopped and had some lunch in the light rain . Fortunately the rain stopped for a while , so I took the opportunity to get some aerial shots . This is the new Brungle Bridge ,we parked in amongst some huge redgums on the corner of the river .

Leaving the bridge , we headed left after going over the bridge , following the river for a while . Just up the road was this little shed with a severe list to the left . We also thought it was a bit early for lambs , but there were a few in the paddock beside .

This is the old Brungle Bridge over Tumut River - this part of the river is now a branch of the river . The river has found an easier way through the valley , and this is a backwater now .

Further up the road we came across the Murrumbidgee River , it was flowing very well .
Back to Coolac and the roadhouse , where we filled up with fuel at the cheapest price we've paid for quite a while - $1.84 litre .
Back to the park and we found a few birds beside the road - sulphur crested cockatoo's , pink galah's and some of the local sheep .

Next day was rain again , but not as much as was predicted - good for us , not so the farmers . I played with the phone camera on close up mode and got some interesting results . Sheoak needles with water droplets .

   Clover with water droplets .

                                                                Bottlebrush seed pods .

The clouds hung low for most of the day and started to break up a little as the afternoon went on  , creating an interesting sunset .
