The starting point

Monday 8 June 2015

A little rain overnight , nothing much though , we slept in till 8am . No rush today , picked up a head cold or some hayfever kicking in , as I had a sneezing bout . After breakfast we cleaned a bit before saying goodbye to Paul And Ros , a lovely couple in the 5th wheeler beside us , who were heading to Cairns for a few days before heading south again .
The morning was over , so we had lunch and went for a drive into Mareeba to the information centre and museum . We recycled some brochures there , rather than throw them away and then
checked out the museum .
The tobacco industry was huge here - the whole industry was worth $90,000,000 , of that Mareeba and Dimboola grew $50,000,000 of it - quite a sizeable chunk !!! It all seemed a little politically incorrect !!! but was still interesting seeing how it was all grown , harvested , packed and blended .
They had an old rail ambulance - just dont get injured anywhere else but beside the railway tracks !!
There were many other displays over about half an acre of grounds . We stayed a bit longer as there was a light shower of rain . The information centre was also one of the better ones .
On a side note , when we arrived here at the rodeo grounds , they gave us an envelope with some information and discounts around town - 4cents a litre off fuel at a local depot , and their other depots in other towns , for the duration of our visit - then there is a one off 5 cents a litre discount as well . $5 off entry fees to a coffee house / museum where they roast coffee , make chocolate and also have some tea to sample - unlimited samples of everything by the way !! Mareeba is a very tourist friendly town .
We decided to have a bit of a drive around Mareeba , as we have just driven down the same roads all the time . Down this road , around that corner , turn left , then right - over that ! lets go !!!
Off to the north we drove , just because we could , there was sugarcane on a large scale , mango trees and citrus growing . There is also a 200 hectare wetland that we will have to visit at some stage . The land around Mareeba’s north is predominantly flat and you can look back toward Atherton and the mountains to the south & east .
There would have been photos , except that someone set the camera up for sunset photos yesterday and didn’t reset it for today , therefore long exposures don’t really work well in daylight hours - figured that one out when I downloaded the photos - luckily there weren’t many today .

So here are some random photos :- first two are the Eyre Peninsular and the third one is The Pinnacles north of Perth .
