7/7/24 Woking , The Oval & Fulham Palace

Our week at Justin's has been fun again , more walks around town when the weather allowed it - so much for a British summer !! Here's one of the canal .

In the town centre , there's a statue of H.G.Wells and sees him sitting watching a globe - War of The Worlds .

Further down the street is Woking's Alien - from the War of the World's book . Apparently , this is where he wrote the book !

One of the reasons to come back to Justins , was to go to a T20 match at The Oval . We headed up the road to meet the others that were going as well - all players or people to do with Justins cricket club - they were up at the pub . The weather wasn't looking great , but anything could happen here , so we went anyway . Had to catch the train up to Vauxhall and walk from there - apparently everyone else had the same idea . All the trains were full , so we stood for the trip up to Clapham Junction , then again for the next train to Vauxhall . It was easy to find The Oval , just follow the crowds . The rain hadn't eased as we entered the ground - it felt strange , we were inside the grounds walls , and it seemed like it would have a roof over it - grandstands to the left , a huge wall to the right and we're still getting wet , yeah no roof . Inevitably , we made our way into the bar area nearest our seats and proceeded to have an ale or two , while watching the Euro Cup between Spain & Germany on a big screen above our heads . Here's a picture of there ground , covers still on and not a patch of dry in sight !

That's the way it stayed , not a ball bowled . Making our way back to the station , the boys decided to make a night of it , having a few more at a pub halfway to the station - it was the loudest pub i've ever been to , unbelievably loud , and that was just people talking , or yelling , we stood outside on the footpath. The decision was made to head to another pub , so back on the train to Clapham Junction - at that point I decided it was time for me to be tucked up in bed , and took the train back to Woking , trying not to fall asleep on the train & miss my station . I made it back to Woking and walking home in the teaming rain , a good night out .
A day out was called on Sunday , so we all bundled into the car and away we went . Isla had the pleasure of our company , so we took a selfie .

We were going to Fulham Palace , which was the Bishops residence . The rain was coming on & off , occasional sun & plenty of cloud , with the odd downpour .

Here's the entrance to the palace , our little photo bomber decided she would be in the middle of it .

Inside there are many rooms , this being the first we went into , with an impressive wooden door and timber walls that don't go to the ceiling ?

There are many displays , even the skeletal remains of one of the bishops dogs !!

In the museum section was this stone coat of arms with the date of 1636 , that came from the outside wall .

More subdued , but still decorated in the theme of the day .

This room impressed me the most - the Library - there are a myriad of books , some that have been read and reread , many , many times , judging by the torn corners and well worn bindings .

Where would you be without a fake shelf section that's actually a doorway !!

While the weather was good , we went over to the walled Bishop's garden . The gate was that low , you had to duck to get through it .

Glasshouses we full of tomatoes & vegetables , the gardens were looking good , the wisteria hedges were out in flower for a 2nd time . There are apple , plum & pear trees all in fruit . Good news , they sell the excess off cheaply .

There were a few unusual flowers there .

This one is a thistle flower , just starting to come out .

There's others we haven't seen as well .

Conditions are excellent for all the gardens at the moment .

There's a kiosk on the lower floor and an outside seating area . We sat outside for a while before moving inside , not much longer and the rain bucketed down - good timing and a nice meal .

Some of the original cobblestones are still in place near the old moat and gatekeepers cottage .

Back home we went , to prepare for our next adventure , stay tuned .
