21/6/16 Another rainy day

After a good nights sleep , we wake to grey skies .
Time to apply some silicon to the boxes on the van , on anything that looked like water would get through . Hopefully that will eliminate some more entry points !!
The rain came & went , some showers heavier than others .
We learnt today , that Onslow airport is reasonably busy for such a small town , with 6 or 7 jets landing here today - one drawback of our caravan park - we are in the flight path !! There are a lot of fly in fly out workers , working here . Certainly in our park , they cater more for the workers than they do for any travellers , with 2 x 3 storey apartment blocks , a huge recreation centre & dining room , and around 30 x 3 room caravans to house them .
After some lunch ,we headed down the road for a look at Onslow , unfortunately for us , the road to Old Onslow is dirt , and is now officially closed till the mud dries !!!
Several campers from along the Ashburton River have been moved on by the local ranger - telling them to get out now while they can - they were fortunate to get out at all , with the roads turned to mush by the rain yesterday and today , very slippery roads , car & van sliding around the place . The end result wasn't pretty - we are just across from the wash bay - the mud is 4 to 5 centimetres thick after one vehicle was washed !!
Heading down to the park at the western end of the main street , we found the Anzac Memorial . It is very impressive - there is a curved concrete seat with 2 bronze slouch hats attached and a couple of plaques attached the other end .

From the seat looking out to sea is a structure resembling the hat badge .

The road to the lookout was also closed - another dirt / mud road , so we headed around to back beach . There is a boardwalk that goes from the Anzac Park to Back Beach - would have been good to do , if the rain had stopped for a while !!
From Back Beach we headed to a lookout that gives you views over the Salt Mine , certainly had a lot of salt there!!

The surrounding bushland will be quite colourful in the next month or so , with many wildflowers starting to bloom . The grey / green bushes in the photo are the same as the ones we saw at Bullara Station with green flowers .

The rain kept coming , but we kept going to 4 Mile Creek , where there is a picnic area and a small boat ramp , and is not far from the beach . The sand on the beach an orange/red colour .

We headed back into town , then turned to have a look at the airport , missed the turn off and went down to the next road to turn around , and found these gates .

The gates are beside the cemetery - very impressive !!
Back into town , around a few of the streets and then back to the park , the wet park !!

Certainly a different view from the last week or so !!

We've had nearly 60mm of rain yesterday and today !!
That's it for today , a little bit fortunate to get out at all .
