Awake early , expecting things to be hot today , not the way it’s starting at the moment !! Breakfast out of the way , we headed out on the bikes before the heat . Another trip down the High Country Rail Trail , this time towards Wodonga - we wont be getting there though , a little bit too far for us !!
The trail goes straight past the showground and there’s a gate to get to it , so we wasted no time in getting going - except for the photo’s . This one shows the edge of the Golf Course .
The rail trail utilises the old rail corridor for most parts , some others have been bypassed - this bridge for one .
The views of the lake kept coming - spectacular !!
About 7klms out is the Sandy Creek rail bridge , it was decommissioned in 1981 , and all the decking between the supports columns was removed . To the local bike trail committees - congratulations for a job well done . This bridge is 600 metres long !!! They couldn’t get the old decking , so arranged for some new ones to be made - not needing to support as much weight as it did in it’s working life . 3 goods trains a day used to travel up this way , taking bulk cement and steel to the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme whilst it was being constructed . The red poles on the side of the bridge are an artistic version of what the bridge looked like when trains were going over it - it’s a great visual effect !!
Crossing to the Wodonga side certainly let’s you know how long it is - didn’t matter which way you went , there was a head wind !! There were some old tree trunks washed up on the rocks as well .
We even found some of the old mile markers along the way .
There are many bays and inlets along the way , here’s another .
One of the locals came across to greet us , standing still , he/she just wandered along past us in no great rush .
The trail has sections of trees forming an arch over the top of the trail , also helping to keep us cool . More glimpses of the water through the trees beside the track , made for a pleasant ride !!
We made it back , the temperature was gradually creeping up , so we recovered from the 16klm ride in the comfort of the air conditioning , then had lunch . The afternoon was spent inside going through some of our old photo’s that had been scanned in to the computer - an entertaining afternoon !! The temperature soared to 42 degrees , so we didn’t mind being indoors .
That’s our day , here’s a map link : - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sBuuSbX8mRx5S0OEL310IvAoTbM&usp=sharing
