15/6/24 Vienna & Grinzing

 

      This is the neighbourhood we are staying , all these old buildings with great facades .

     This one's the view from our apartment window .

     Okay , into the city via tram , then a walk to Karlskirche ( Church of St Charles ). There's a large pond out the front with a modern sculpture in it . One of the towers at the front is under restoration , the other has been completed . There was a classical music concert happening today , so no entry without a ticket .

  We then walked for a bit again , going down the underground for a loo stop before getting the Hop on & off bus again . First stop is the Votivkirche, this church is amazing . The outside of the church is intricate in design and almost a work of art towering above the street .

We seem to be drawn to it whenever in the city region , it is so impressive .  The front doors are enormous, probably at least 5m tall .

   Today we get to go inside . The scale of this place is incredible , high arched ceilings , intricate patterns , columns and of course stained glass windows . There were quite a few people in here at the same time , but there was an air of peace & quietness inside , no-one was making noise , there was silent respect .

      We're not religious , but you cant not be impressed by this !! The floors are mostly overlooked , but are also quite intricate .

    Back out to the bus and one had just pulled up - perfect . It was headed up to Grinzing and Cobenzyl where there's a view back over the city . Listening and learning about Vienna , it's famous inhabitants , we enjoyed the journey up to the vineyards of Grinzing . The bus wound it's way up the winding road to Cobenzyl , we got ready to get off at the top , but the bus stopped for a short time and picked 2 people up , before heading back down the mountain again . Well this was a bit disappointing , we wanted to get off , as did about 10 others - they were voicing their disapproval to the driver . It didn't help that he could only explain in german . We all got off at Grinzing on the way back down , we had our lunch in a park beside the road . This is the main road through Grinzing .

    After lunch we did a little food shopping and caught the bus again , getting off in the city and catching the tram home again . Hop on hop off bus scratch 2 . Here's another shot of the Votivkirche spires .
