29/5/24 Butterfly World , Appley Beach , Culver Down

Off to the butterfly house today , it will be the warmest we've been since leaving Singapore haha . On entry we found quite a few different types that were very busy flapping around the place . Further in we stopped and they came and checked us out , this one liking Lyn's top .

Another variety quite happily sitting on the floor .

They have many different types & varieties .

And the flowers to keep them happy .

These two were content to sit together and pose for me .

One of the interesting ones on the shade cloth ceilings .

After enjoying the warmth & humidity , it was time to head over to Appley Beach and an area called Spithead . This is "the " beach to go to , it's just across The Solent from Portsmouth , and it's serviced with trains on the Isle , hovercrafts from Portsmouth , passenger ferries and car ferries . The hovercrafts did many , many trips in the time we were there . This is the beach at low tide , it's mainly sand - about 80% - and very popular .

Being low and flat , when the tide comes in , it really comes in - from what you can see in the next photo , the water will be hitting the concrete wall in the bottom right of photo in about 15mins .

Beach time over again , and it's off to Culver Downs . The monument on the cliffs we saw from Shanklin is here . This is looking back toward Shanklin .

There was yet another gun placement here during the wars , in a commanding position overlooking the English Channel . The Isle of Wight has been a very strategic and wanted place over the centuries , with the Romans , French , Nords etc , etc , all wanting to own it . It is really good agricultural land as well .

There are 3 or 4 houses on the left and a pub on the right . This is a few miles from the nearest town , but here's a pub - the 3 or 4 locals would love it - their own pub across the road .

The monument is to a very generous Earl of Yarborough , A gentleman who was very generous with assistance to the local communities back in the day . Must have been good , this is a large monument that can be seen for miles and miles .

  And that's it for today , here's a map link :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1BuPT1qNGCV9k5J0xAI50rkPp10KQU6Q&usp=sharing
