13/4/16 Katanning

The rain had stopped overnight , but we still woke to an overcast sky . Good news for some of the mosquito's , there were 5 still alive and flying round the bedroom - not for long !!!!
Today we are having a look around Katanning . It is a large town , it has a wheat loading facility for rail transport , several car dealers , a couple of supermarkets , several banks , many shops and about 5 fuel stations - speaking of which - I can't remember the last time I filled a vehicle with fuel and actually paid less , than the amount of litres that I put in !!! Diesel is 99.4 cents a litre , then we got a 4c discount as well - 51 litres for $48.65 - happy with that !!!
We drove around a lot of the housing , some fine old houses , some not so fine old and newer houses, and some nice older buildings , here are a few of them .

After driving around for a while , we were undecided , do we go to Dumbleyung or Broomehill , Kojonup or Tambellup ??? Broomehill was closest , so it won out . The road took us through grazing land and wheat / canola fields . There is plenty of water lying around at the moment after all the rain this week . It's funny though , some dams are full , then others are nearly dry - hard to figure out !
Arriving at Broomehill , we find a small town with a  shire council office , what looked like a couple of old hotels ( they were once hotels , not anymore though ) and only a few shops . The railway goes through town and there is another grain handling facility here . We found the sports club - it has bowling greens , tennis courts , a cricket field that turns to a soccer field with a hockey field beside it , in the winter season . We had some lunch beside the hockey field before heading back to Katanning .
After driving back , we did another drive around town and found Police Pools Rd , and went for a drive to see what was there - pools as it turns out . The local police decided to set up an outpost , so they could keep an eye on the sandalwood cutters many years ago .
The pools were flowing today , normally they don't flow and are a bit salty , there were a lot of tiny fish swimming in the dark waters . There are supposed to be long necked turtles and many birds . We found lots of mosquito's ( just for a change ) and thousands of meat ants . There are boardwalks and tracks to follow , leading you through different areas beside the pools and different types of trees & plants . The aboriginal name for here is interesting -Twonkwillingup - which means a place to sit and listen .

The  Sheoaks have longer needles than normal and have many nuts on the branches .

The clouds were starting to break , with the odd areas of blue sky showing through , the sun started to warm things up - we got up to 23 degrees today !!
