The starting point

Friday 18 March 2016

18/3/16 We've done gorges , rocks & beaches , time for some forest

Time to head for the hills , but first we decided to wash the RV . Packed everything away after breakfast , hitched up , emptied tanks , then headed around to the wash down area . I Washed , Lyn hosed and we were done in good time , heading out the gate at 10am .
Our destination was Pemberton - a timber town , with a large mill , surrounded by dense forests with lots to see and do .
We headed along the Vasse Highway out along the coastal plains leading into the hills . The first set of hills we came across were just after a mine , with big tip trucks crossing the highway , one in each direction and just a warning sign to say heavy vehicles crossing !! From there we started to climb , it was a good road to drive - very scenic , just not necessarily the smoothest or widest .
First stop was a rest stop at Nannup , also a timber town . We stopped beside the caravan park at the Arboretum - it has covered areas in a curve at the back and a large grassed area , then a covered stage area . Back in the ute , and off to Pemberton , another 80klms down the road . The road wound up & down hills and through forests . The trees gradually got taller and taller , there was some plantation radiate pine , but the majority was Karri forest . Individual trees growing in excess of 45 metres , and 3m thick at the base - beautiful smooth barked gum trees !!
Reaching Pemberton , we checked in to the caravan park , set up and had some lunch . The park is in the bottom of the valley beside 2 small brooks , surrounded by Karri forests .

There are walking tracks into the forest beside the park - one leads to the local swimming pool , so we headed that way . There are also many mountain bike tracks here as well . We arrived at a high pool fence , it was built on a weir that backed up about 150m of water and is about 30m wide at the wall , and is surrounded by forest . There is a distinct under storey of trees & shrubs 3 to 5 metres tall, then there are the real trees stretching upwards towards the sky . The reflections in the water were quite amazing also .

The managers at the park told us about there would be a section of forest being burnt this afternoon, and it would be close , but nothing to worry about . They were right , it was close !!!

We are parked behind the trees in the bottom right hand side of the photo !! Time for a sit down and chill , so we had some cheese & bickies and a beer , whilst sitting in the sun , at least until it went down behind the trees . We were joined by some local ring necked parrots in the tree above us - people feed them regularly , and you can get some seed from the office - they will come down and eat out of your hand .

That's your lot for today , more trees tomorrow , here's a map link :-https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z1G8gwwxwyYo.klk1xTkcdjCM&usp=sharing
