5/4/22 Eucla Telegraph Station

Awake to another overcast day - it has it's moments and clears for a while , then overcast again etc etc . The good thing is that the battery gets charged up again , the solar on the van is performing very well - we've only connected the ute up a couple of times during full overcast to take over the charging process .   Back out onto the highway and up to Mundrabilla , where we top up on fuel to hopefully get us across past Nullabor Roadhouse - it's diesel was $2.80 a litre ( &2.95 the day before !!) . We filled up at $2.65 a litre  and carried on toward Eucla .

The highway goes up Eucla pass - more like a straight road up a hill off the coastal plain we'd been driving on . Pulling off the road , we headed back down another road that took us back down to the coastal plain ( I know right , one minute you're on top of the hill , then next minute back down again ). This road took us out to the old Eucla Telegraph Station .

Stopping in the carpark , we headed out onto the sand dunes and the few large trees that pinpoint where the ruins are . The sand seems to have covered up some more of the building from our last visit .

Heading out toward the jetty , we remembered it was a fair hike to get there - about 1 klm through soft sand - so we stopped and came back passing another spot where another building used to be - this one had been pulled down though , all you can make out is some of the rocks used in the walls , and a flat area .

We checked out some of the station , shame to be losing it to nature .

And everyone that's carved their name in the walls over the years .

Back to the vehicle and around to the free camp - we had the choice of spots as we were the first one there today - which can be a good and bad thing - you have to make a choice where you want to set up ? After checking the wind in a few spots , we settled on a position which gave us a bit of cover from the wind , set up and had some lunch . The drone came out of the bag again , giving some aerial shots of the station .

We didn't get to the old jetty , but could now see it . This is what remains .

How about the colours in this one .

The remainder of the afternoon was spent inside due to the constant cold wind blowing .
Sunset cam around and provided some opportunities for some more photos .
