12/8/16 Mangoes & Elephants

We've finally found the warmth we were looking for - 17 overnight and 35 during the day !!! Consequently , we didn't do a whole lot today . This morning was spent looking at options for things to do and see . We have booked a trip for tomorrow , so there will be something to do !!
Lunch was calling , then we drove around and over the Diversion Bridge ( this bridge & wall creates Lake Kununurra ) and went out Plantation Road . There is a large amount of plantations out here that are fed with water from the Ord River via canals . Sandalwood takes up a lot of room - it also makes a lot of money !!! Mangoes were the other main crop with hundreds of acres of them - pity they aren't fruiting at the moment !!
This is the entrance to Tiger Lodge - think they like palm trees !!

Further down the road was the Zebra Rock Gallery , so while we were there , we went for a look through - there were some nice jewellery there and some good looking things carved out of the zebra rock . It is supposed to be scarcer than diamonds - there are only 2 deposits they can mine - the others were flooded when Lake Argyle was filled up !!
Across the Ord River is a rocky ridge that looks similar to an elephant - hence the name Elephant Rock !!

Here are some of the mangoes . Plantation Rd goes for approx 12klms , and all of that area apart from a nature reserve at the start , is flat and being utilised - amazing what you can do when there is some water around !!!

Back to the park and time for a swim in the pool , we chatted to a couple from Newcastle who had flown out to Kalumburu and Mitchell Falls this morning . They had a fantastic time apparently !!
Cheese & biscuits and a cold beer were in order .
Good thing we decided not to go into Purnululu NP - it was closed today due to bush fires - it would not be the place to be in fires , no way to escape in a hurry !!!
 That's us for today , Bye .
