21&22/8/16 Water , water & more water

Whilst browsing Facebook yesterday , a picture appeared from Molly Springs at Kununurra . Seeing we are here , and it looked good , we decided we should check it out - it is only 30 klms towards Halls Creek so not too far .
After the turn off , we drove in the 3klms of gravel & dust and parked . There is the usual sign telling you how far etc - this one indicated a 1klm return walk , so we loaded the backpack with water & other necessary stuff , and headed off .
Crossing the creek we went around the corner and found another creek crossing , another 20m and we were there - flat out being 150m from the carpark - someone may have got their wires crossed when they were getting this sign done !!

The pool wasn't terribly big - about 8m x 5m , the water clear & small fish swimming around . There was water coming in , but not a great deal of it . I clambered through the long grass and up the rocky hillside to get some photos .

On the top of the rocky section I clambered up was a fig tree growing quite happily - the roots just seem to go wherever they like .

Back to Lyn& the pool , there's a large Tea Tree beside the pool , and it's roots looked good in the water - it was also some protection for the fish in the pool .

Deciding not to swim here , we headed back to the ute . The small orange cliff beside us looked okay - probably would have been better to have seen this small area before going to Emma Gorge , it seems to pale in comparison .

We drove back into town and had our lunch beside the lake near the Diversion Dam, watching Kingfishers and Rainbow Bee Eaters as we ate .
Back to the park , we headed for the pool cool off .
Dining out at the Pumphouse was a little treat , we had dinner with Kym & Caroline . Some salt & pepper calamari and a marinara pizza , with a Matsos Brewery Ginger Beer , then a Mango Beer !!
As we were leaving , we checked over the edge of the deck in the lake - there were hundreds of catfish swimming around attracted by the lights and probably more by some food scraps !!

22/8/16

Today we decided to stay out of the ute and go for a paddle in Lilly Lagoon and Lake Kununurra . To start off , we went for a quick swim in the pool first to cool off , before jumping in the kayak . The water in the lagoon is clear & green , many water lillies and islands of grass & trees & ferns . Birds are plentiful here , there are plenty of dead trees they can use to perch on .

This lagoon is accessible from the main lake for fishing boats , houseboats etc . The navigation channel winds through a lot of pandanus and other trees . It was surprising to see how far we were from the lake itself - about 1klm .

As we paddled out into the lake , the wind started to pick up , so we headed into the wind toward the diversion dam so that we could turn at any time and have some wind assistance to get back !!

The wind started to pick up , so we turned and headed back in to the lagoon . There are many areas that shoot off from the main channel , so we took a few of them to have a look .

Some of the many birds we saw were - Azure Kingfisher , Rainbow Bee Eaters , Snake Neck Dart , Snake Neck Heron , Pelicans , Jacanas ( Jesus Birds - walk on water sort of ) , Sea Eagles , Whistling Kites and Little Pied Cormorants - even a couple of babies in their nest !!

This is the Jacana with a red crown . The Jacana is a lily pad walker , with large feet and long legs for the size of it's body .

After a couple of hours paddling , we headed back , cleaned up the kayak and headed to the pool for another swim .
Lunch done and the ute cleaned up and reloaded , we headed to the pool again for another swim . Such were the decisions we had to make today - a hectic day !!!!
That's your lot for today , the next few days we will be out of service for a while , catch you on the other side !!
