25/8/16 Out for a paddle

Aah , another glorious day , we wake to the sound of our neighbours - to be more precise 3 of them packing up and heading off - that’s not such a bad thing , BUT , it was 5:30am !!!!! Inconsiderate mongrels !! Okay rant over !!

Birds were going off this morning as well , many different varieties , all chirping away merrily . We got up and had breakfast then headed off down to the boat ramp .
Unloaded and set up , we were off at 8:05am heading out onto the lake . There was some wind coming from the south creating some wind swell , but nothing to be worried about yet !!
We paddled along a cliff line out into a wide channel , before crossing to a large island and doing a circuit of it .

Views of the surrounding mountains are fantastic , sheer cliff faces , spinifex grass and in some of the protected areas below the cliffs were small forests of trees and thick bush .
We found a few freshwater crocodiles along the way - not really interested in us at all .

The water is crystal clear , you could see about 7m below us . The next photo was mainly taken for the mountains in the background , but you can see the weed in the water below !!

There were many dead trees along the sides of this section of the lake , good fish habitat . Must have been okay as very near here were some shags on a rock - Little Pied Cormorants and a Darter were making use of the rocky outcrop .

Crossing back into the main channel toward the dam wall , we headed south into the wind before making a run across toward the dam wall . It was helpful to have a bit of a cross tailwind to assist us across . The wind had picked up and was creating a half a metre swell - we surfed along some of the waves and bobbed along through others , some even decided they would come and join us in the kayak !!
The lake is about 25m deep in this section , so there was quite a bit of water there . We made across - it would have been about one & a half kilometres , and was a good workout !!
We cleaned up and packed up , heading back to the van for lunch . There was a gap beside us , so we parked in there so I could use the ute as a ladder to get on top of the van to wash it .

Roof cleaned , we had lunch , then washed the rest of the van , before chatting to the neighbours from Cronulla for a couple of hours . Day done !!
