From our gravel pit , we head to Adelaide River Showgrounds for 3 nights . The benefits , it has a pool and the cheapest fuel in the NT $1.87.9 for diesel . The afternoon and evening went by , nothing much happening . Next day we headed out to the southern end of Litchfield NP , the road out for about 30klms is very bumpy , but then you turn off toward Daly River . Driving through the savannah vegetation , we seemed to come out of the bush into a large flat plain that was covered in tall grass - it was quite surreal . On one side of the road it looked like grazing country .
On the other side , well we weren't sure , as you couldn't see past the 2m high grass .
This went on for 5klms or so , then back to the savannah scrub again . Before long we had arrived at Reynolds River Rd and turned off . The road took us along the edge of the dry river and the NP , cattle happily wandering through - seems to be the way they do national parks in NT !
After about 15klms of driving through this ,
We arrived at Surprise Falls carpark and went for a wander along this track .
Finding fern lined pools with pandanus growing happily everywhere .
At the end of the track was a rocky section to climb over to get to this pool . Water was just trickling over the rocks from above .
After a bit more climbing , there's another pool just above the first - more people in there .
This is the view from the top pool down to the second , and then down to the large one at the base - no-one was swimming in that one however !! There were about 10 people getting in & out of the water , one young guy with snorkel & goggles told us it was about 12m deep !! We enjoyed a couple of dips in that one before heading off again - things to do , places to see .
We continued out onto the road to Daly River , it was another 35klms away , so we thought why not . Arriving at Daly River , we weren't sure what to expect , so we headed around past the police station to the old causeway . Down off the gravel road and onto the sand & rock of the Daly River bed , we found a causeway that had plenty of water running . There were a few cars & trailers parked further up - obviously out fishing .
Time for an aerial view , the police station is on centre left , ranges in the distance .
The main road with it's all weather bridge in the middle , the Daly River Inn & Caravan Park is on the bottom right .
We then headed around to the Inn / General Store & CPark to have some lunch , as we went over the bridge I took this next photo and have zoomed right in on what looked like a log - no log , that's a 5m crocodile !!!
We enjoyed lunch in the shady grassed area , then headed back to Adelaide River . I looked more closely at this photo later that evening - if you zoom in , you can see 6 crocodiles on the edge or just in the water !!
We are still amazed at how much water was flowing down this river , it hasn't had any serious rain for quite some time , meaning that it's spring fed !!
Another great day out , here's a map link :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1-UM1LPHPfPwA3ZGpO-jO3ynE4_ajZjM&usp=sharing
