22/7/22 Longreach Thompson River , Lilly Lagoon , Captain Starlight's Lookout

Here we are in Longreach , what will we do first ??? Qantas - booked out for the next 3 days , Stockmans Hall of Fame - booked out also - Hmmmm . Captain Starlights Lookout sounds good , so we head out of town to the Thompson River and check out the cheap camp on the river - there has to be over 70 vans out here , anyway here's the river - a silty murky colour .

Utilising the zoom lens revealed a paddle steamer parked up past the railway bridge - it's The Pride Of The Murray , moored beside another paddle wheeler . The Pride of the Murray is a recent arrival from Deniliquin ( I think ) , they had 5 days ton get it here on the back of a truck , then get it back in the river before it started to shrink and leak !!!

We passed the golf club on the way , this is looking down the first hole !

Next was Lilly Lagoon , a nice section of billabongs with water lillies and birds .

After driving for 42 kms , we reached Captain Starlights Lookout - a 35m high rocky outcrop in the middle of the floodplains - perfect for a lookout as you have a 360 degree view . Captain Starlight was a cattle rustler - he stole over 1000 cattle and a white bull , and he herded them all the way to South Australia to sell them . The white bull was very traceable and seemed to be his undoing , he was arrested and tried , but got acquitted ??? Anyway the lookout - he sent one of his men up to keep watch , in case anyone came looking - this was before they headed to SA .

Some of the views over the floodplains .

   The access track .

Some of the rocks on top .

Then this one on the way up / down , it's sandstone , multi layered and coloured .

As we were leaving , we followed a track around the base of the rock and disturbed some budgerigars.

On the way back there were a couple of brolga , this one doing a bit of a dance .

Probably trying to impress his mate .

There were plenty of mulla mulla as well .

With all the recent rainfall , vegetation is looking fabulous . Here's a map link :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1aVI6iaY1Z6pUOicP90IX_3pJiz80hMM&usp=sharing
