8/8/22 Caranbirini Conservation Reserve Lost City

After a good nights sleep , we wake early to go for a walk around Caranbirini Conservation Reserve . It will be hot today , so we'll get out there early for our walk . The long grass beside the van has been blown downed swirled around .

Plenty of trees here as well .

Our walk will take us into Lost City - we were going to go here 7 years ago , but something changed our mind back then - but we're back now !
We packed up and drove up to the carpark and entry into the reserve , starting our walk . Big trees and an eroded ridge gave us an idea of what was to come at the start of the walk .

Tall pillars of sandstone in strange shapes meant you had to stop and just look around you to take it all in .

The track took us through many different areas , with something different around each corner .

Kapok trees are flowering well here too , providing a bright contrast with the rock behind .

Further into the walk and we were still going along the outside edge , trees blocking out the views of the cliffs .

Having a look around revealed this section that had rows of holes in it ?? wonder what caused that ??

One of our favourites - Ripple stone - it is formed in shallow water - when it was all underwater .

X marks the spot here !!

There's a few flowers out at the moment , here's one . It's a strange one , with the flowers coming out of the tip of the leaf !

The track now started to go into the ridge . Long eroded sections now standing in a variety of shapes & sizes .

These ones are over 20m tall .

The track got interesting now , leading us through narrow openings in the rock , what's through the other side ?

More thin sections to wander through . Here's someone for a size comparison .

Lyn found this bright shiny beetle - about the size of a 10 cent coin .

Trees have been out in blossom recently .

After a few thin sections , we found ourselves out on the western side of the ridge .

After a walk back to the carpark , we went up to a bird hide beside a billabong and had a seat out of the sun for a while . Water lillies are out in flower .

Water level in the billabong are low , but the wildlife was plentiful . Archer fish , turtles & many birds . We saw cormorants , herons , blue winged kookaburras , an azure kingfisher that flew down to the water and back into a tree in a flash of blue - very quick ! There were other birds , doves crows , whistling kites and some finches as well .

This is the blue winged kookaburra , it has a frog in its mouth from it's recent dive into the water . Such a beautiful bird when you can see it's wings out .

We sat and watched mesmerised by all the birds and their antics , before deciding to head off into Borroloola . Very satisfied with our walk today . Her's a map link :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1qmgOACJiKwo1usya1MgX7Kq6E39Zb5c&usp=sharing
