7/8/22 To Cape Crawford & Caranbirini

Continuing on to Cape Crawford and the Heartbreak Hotel , we found more grazing land , fortunately the road has improved slightly , still flat as ever though !

Tree lines now appear on the horizon , the country is changing , seed heads blowing in the wind are also shining in the sun . One saving grace , we've had tailwinds for the majority of the drive - that helps fuel economy quite a bit .

Just to remind us what can happen when you go off the single lane - this tyre track is about 300mm deep , and would be a real hazard if you had to get off in a hurry !

Termite mounds are getting more prevalent .

The colours of the mounds change according to the soil types , and they look like cemeteries - tomb stones everywhere .

Wedgetail eagles are getting more frequent , chewing on road kill . They have a very distinctive shape and are also usually slower to get flying , so they present another hazard to your daily drive .

Due to their size , they don't get very high off the ground very quickly - besides they have to come back to the carcass they are chewing on !

A real change in scenery now with ridges & higher trees , as well as Kapok trees out in bright yellow flowers .

Thought this was a bit funny - single lane road , 110 zone and a corner that you cant see round - what could possibly go wrong - we were flat out going 80, any faster was a bit dodgy to say the least !!

We're now into more hills & ridges , scenery types changing regularly .

We got to Heartbreak Hotel / roadhouse /caravan park and put some fuel in to get us to Borroloola - about 110klms away . On the way there , we found McArthur Mine - coincidentally , that's where the twin lane road started again - probably more to do with taking the product to the port in quad road trains . They mine zinc & lead oxides here .

We found another free camp beside the road and set up for the night , tomorrow will be interesting - Caranbirini Conservation Reserve .  Here's a map link :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1OMqqk9GIVzOzlH_L39v7dGlrZ0ApAcE&usp=sharing
