3/8/22 Nowranie waterhole & caves , Camooweal Cave

What to do whilst in Camooweal , go caving of course ! So off we went to Nowranie Waterhole & Caves . The waterhole & caves are in Wiliyan-ngurru National Park about 15 kms south of Camooweal . The road in was interesting , probably not for your average road car , with deep wheel ruts and some washouts to get through . The first stop was at the waterhole , this is all grazing country - even the National Park ?? You can see the cattle tracks along the side of the waterhole .

The cattle were still there as well .

The waterhole is about 500m long and as you can see has had more water than what is currently there .

About 1.5klms away were the caves , this is the first one - it's a bit smaller - more like a sink hole than a cave , but they do open up below ground apparently !

Only 100m away was the 2nd cave , certainly larger than the first and probably a lot more dangerous - only the spot where we took this photo from is fenced . Interesting information , the water level is 70m below ground level , and at 100m there's water circulating from somewhere . The caves are formed in the limestone rock - very porous and cracked .

Here's a closeup of the rock

Water tends to sit in this small depression in the rock - at least for a little while , till it dries up or leaches through the limestone .

And here's the aerial view of the caves , small one on the left and larger on the right .

Some of the gumtrees are about to burst into blossom .

While we were reading the information sign a little - 350mm long - snake appeared and snuck off in another direction when it realised it had us for company !!

We took the longer 4wd track out of the park , it was interesting to see the changing landscape in the park as we weaved in and out around watercourses and fence lines . The bush here closed in over the track.

Now back to town , we headed north to Camooweal Cave , it was only about 5klms out of town . We arrived to find a sinkhole ? covered in trees with a track leading downward into it . We followed the track down through the trees and came out to find a cave . This is looking out to the track back up .

The cave is about 20m across , with a couple of holes in the roof where it's eroded away . A lot of water must flow into here judging by the sticks , branches & grass lodged up on the cave walls about 2m above the ground level you can see .
With that done , we headed back into town to try and sort out a prepaid card for our phone . The website locked me out yesterday after it timed out on me 4 times - it then informed me to go to a Telstra service centre to get it sorted !!! not one of them anywhere near Camooweal !!! but we got some wifi from one of the fuel stations and got it sorted - bloody telstra !
Back to camp and chill out for the rest of the afternoon , here's a map link : - https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=17EMNaobzafCXsWONtXYEKxSgB_9g7Po&usp=sharing
